Londons Homerton Set For Second Tower

Published on 23-03-2009 by Skyscrapernews.com
Adding to the growing number of medium scale tall buildings in East London is this new part 6, part 13-storey tower by Davy Smith Architects.

Developed by Turnhold Properties, the site overlooks Homerton overground rail station and occupies a roughly triangular plot that stands on the junction of Berger Road and Digby Road.

The scheme starts with 83 square metres of commercial space on the ground floor, and features 97 new apartments in the floors above, all of which will be affordable housing of some measure.

55% of this total will be rented from a housing association and the other 45% will be intermediate housing to help the owner occupiers of the future get on the first rung of the housing ladder. More notably, 48% of the total apartments will be three and four bedroom residences aimed at accommodating families showing that the market is changing as the demand for one and two bedroom apartments falls away.

A limited amount of parking spaces are provided for the disabled whilst there will also be space for 125 bicycles.

The scheme will be clad largely in warmly coloured terracotta panels. The lightness of the cladding will gradually change depending on the face of the building, with the top of the tower being a lighter tone and one end of the lower-rise L shaped wing that encloses a smaller courtyard being a darker shade.

This is the second building over 10 floors proposed for this area of London lately, a 12 storey building is already going up on the other side of the overground railway line that the Digby Road tower stands next to.
